Caroline Gray
When Caroline approaches the canvas, her aim is fundamental and traditional. She is chiefly concerned with light, space, and color. She constructs the painting through her use of color. Caroline primarily paints perceptually, constantly evaluating the color relationships within the composition. Her process grounds her in the moment, intensely looking at the subject and capturing the varying hues. Through her process, she is asking herself when does abstract become representational and vice versa? Caroline mainly works in oil, but also dabbles in watercolor.
Caroline grew up in Birmingham, Alabama and now lives there. She attended Vanderbilt University and received her BFA in European History in 2016. She graduated from the New York Academy of Art with her MFA in painting in 2019.
